Swedish Teenage Climate Activist Greta Thunberg Sets Sail to US in Racing Yacht

先日ご紹介したスウェーデンの気候変動活動家の16歳の少女、グレタちゃんが、国連の Climate Action Summit in New YorkとSantiagoで開催されるCOP25に参加するため、最も環境に優しい方法、しなわちレーシングヨットに乗って3週間かけて太平洋を渡ることになったと、ロシアの新聞SPUTNIKが伝えています。
1997年の京都議定書の時は環境先進国だった日本が、その後原発を推進することで再生可能エネルギーの開発では中国を含めた世界に遅れを取り、プラスチックの削減は進まず、京都議定書の２１世紀版COP２１パリ協定では、日本は批准が間に合わず、11月7日にモロッコで始まるＣＯＰ22のパリ協定締約国の第一回目の会議に正式メンバーとして参加できなくなりいつの間にか環境後進国日本になってしまっているなか、この16歳の少女は精力的に活動してノーベル平和賞の候補者にもノミネートされています。

Climate activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Greta Thunberg has figured out how to get to the US in the most eco-friendly of ways; she has been offered a seat on a racing boat.
“Good news! I’ll be joining the UN Climate Action Summit in New York, COP25 in Santiago and other events along the way. I’ve been offered a ride on the 60ft racing boat Malizia II. We’ll be sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from the UK to NYC in mid- August”, the teenage activist, sometimes branded a doomsayer, tweeted.
The Malizia II's crew agreed to sail Thunberg to the US for free for the sake of the environment.
"Greta's mission is one we strongly support and believe in, Greta is an ambassador who delivers a fundamental message both for our society and for the survival of future generations, and we are honoured to be able to take her to America to continue her work", team Malizia wrote on Instagram, posting a picture of Greta's "school strike" that propelled her to international stardom.

I get so many questions about my posing in travel photos on Instagram [and in general] so I wanted to create a [hopefully] really helpful blog post to show you exactly what I do. This post isn’t to tell you that there is ONLY ONE WAY! It is to simply show you MY WAY and answer some commonly asked questions. If you do something different, that is great and I am happy for you! This is simply my way and not intended to put down any other way. But before we do that I am going to give you a little background on my history and how I got to where I am today. First off, YES I used to do modeling locally but I was really bad at it compared to other girls. I do not credit what I look like now in travel photos on Instagram to my modeling history. I could NOT pose well and everything was just awkward. Of course, I got a few decent shots, but I shudder to think of all the images the photographers did NOT show me! Second of all, the ONLY reason I got into modeling locally was for the free pretty pictures. I will NOT lie about this and that is LITERALLY the reason I modeled. To wear pretty clothes and get good photos of myself.

He was just a Stanford researcher taking advantage of the grant provided by the NSA and CIA through the unclassified MDDS program.
“The development of the Google algorithms was carried on a variety of computers, mainly provided by the NSF-DARPA-NASA-funded Digital Library project at Stanford,” Stanford’s Infolab says of its origin, for example. NSF likewise only references the digital libraries grant, not the MDDS grant as well, in its own history of Google’s origin. In the famous research paper, “The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine,” which describes the creation of Google, Brin and Page thanked the NSF and DARPA for its digital library grant to Stanford. But the grant from the intelligence community’s MDDS program—specifically designed for the breakthrough that Google was built upon—has faded into obscurity.
Did the CIA directly fund the work of Brin and Page, and therefore create Google? No. But were Brin and Page researching precisely what the NSA, the CIA, and the intelligence community hoped for, assisted by their grants? Absolutely.

Boris Johnson wins race to be Tory leader and PM

UKのメイ首相の辞任に伴い保守党で後任の投票が行われ、元外務大臣のBoris Johnsonが選ばれ次期首相になる事が決定しました。EUとの合意ができなくても合意無きBrexitを強行するという公言しており、UKのトランプとの声も上がっています。
Boris Johnson has been elected new Conservative leader in a ballot of party members and will become the next UK prime minister.
He beat Jeremy Hunt comfortably, winning 92,153 votes to his rival's 46,656.
The former London mayor takes over from Theresa May on Wednesday.
In his victory speech, Mr Johnson promised he would "deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn".
Speaking at the Queen Elizabeth II centre in London, he said: "We are going to energise the country.
"We are going to get Brexit done on 31 October and take advantage of all the opportunities it will bring with a new spirit of can do.
"We are once again going to believe in ourselves, and like some slumbering giant we are going to rise and ping off the guy ropes of self doubt and negativity."

Iran seizes a British oil tanker

イギリスがイランのタンカーを拿捕して危機が増加していましたが、今回はイランの革命防衛隊がイギリスのタンカーを拿捕しました。対立がエスカレートしてきており、戦争につながらないか心配であるとともにアメリカから要請されて自衛隊がホルムズ海峡警備に派遣されるのが心配です。
AFTER MORE than a week of warnings, Iran has made good on its threat to seize a British oil tanker. The Stena Impero, a 30,000-ton vessel, was travelling west through the Strait of Hormuz on the afternoon of July 19th, bound for Saudi Arabia. Then the ship’s owner says it was “approached by unidentified small crafts and a helicopter.” It soon lost contact. That evening, tracking data showed the tanker and its 23 crew members in Iranian waters off Qeshm island, where the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) maintains a base. The IRGC says it was seized for “failing to respect international maritime rules”. A second vessel, the Mesdar, flagged in Liberia but operated by a British firm, was also reportedly diverted to Iran. Iranian news agencies said it had later been released.

アメリカの人気旅行雑誌TRAVEL+LEISUREが読者に調査した世界のトップシティ15を発表しました。今年1位になったのは、ベトナムのHoi An（ホイアン）。ホイアンは、ベトナム中部の都市でトゥボン川の河口に位置する古い港町。である。人口121,716人。中国人街を中心に古い建築が残り、「ホイアンの古い町並み」がユネスコの世界文化遺産に登録されたからでしょうか。
でもこのトップ15に面白い傾向があります。
アメリカは、ニューヨークとかサンフランシスコなどの都市ではなく、チャールストンとサンタフェの２ヶ所だけ12位、14位に入っていることや、ベスト5にメキシコの都市が３ヶ所も入っています。
アジアも人気で、ベトナム以外にタイから２ヶ所、インドとインドネシからも１ヶ所入っていて、日本からも2都市がベスト10に入っています。どことどこだかわかりますか？

Microsoft has created a hologram that will transform someone into a digital speaker of another language. The software giant unveiled the technology during a keynote at the Microsoft Inspire partner conference this morning in Las Vegas. Microsoft recently scanned Julia White, a company executive for Azure, at a Mixed Reality capture studio to transform her into an exact hologram replica.
The digital version appeared onstage to translate the keynote into Japanese. Microsoft has used its Azure AI technologies and neural text-to-speech to make this possible. It works by taking recordings of White’s voice, in order to create a personalized voice signature, to make it sound like she’s speaking Japanese.

Arnie 'addicted' to Terminator as original Sarah Connor returns for sequel

Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back for "Terminator: Dark Fate" because he is "addicted" to the killer cyborg franchise that launched his career -- but it was the return of Linda Hamilton that stole the show at Comic-Con Thursday.
Hamilton, 62, reprises her famous role as Sarah Connor -- who she first depicted in the 1984 original, but left after 1991 blockbuster "Terminator 2" -- and age does not appear to have slowed her down one bit.
Exclusive footage from the upcoming sequel showed an athletic Hamilton leaping from a vehicle to confront two super-powered, shape-shifting robots with an array of weapons including a gun, a bazooka and a grenade.
"My name is Sarah Connor. I hunt Terminators," she announces.
Schwarzenegger and Hamilton discussed their decisions to return for "Dark Fate," out November 1, in a panel with director Tim Miller and cast newcomers at the world's largest pop culture convention in San Diego.
"It's absolutely incorrect to say that I don't need to come back. Of course I needed to come back ... I'm addicted to Terminator," said Schwarzenegger, who has featured in four of the five "Terminator" movies to date.

昨日ご紹介したきれいなメキシコのリゾートが危機に瀕しています。
アマゾンの森林伐採により土壌が腐り、それが川から海に流れ込み、海が過剰な栄養により海藻を異常繁殖させているとのこと。今、その腐った海藻はジャマイカ島と同じ550Kmの長さにも及ぶ塊としてメキシコに向かっており、ユカタン半島全体を覆ってしまう危機が迫っています。
その海藻の塊は腐った卵のような悪臭を放ち、観光客も近寄らなくなっています。

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is home to clear blue seas, golden sands and a glorious backdrop that includes ancient Mayan ruins. Millions flock to its resorts every year and tourism is vital to the area’s economy.
But now much of the coast is covered in heaps of rotting seaweed, contributing to an economic and ecological crisis.
The issue has been caused by an enormous bloom of sargassum algae, which washed ashore from the nearby Sargasso Sea. There has long been sargassum in that part of the ocean. But the rate of its growth has increased rapidly in recent years – so much so that in 2018 its summer bloom almost spanned the Atlantic from West Africa to the Caribbean.
And things are set to get even worse.
The roots of the problem
At around 550 kilometres in length, another mass of sargassum algae is heading towards the Mexican coast. It’s roughly the same size as the island of Jamaica, and when it arrives it could stretch all the way south along the Yucatan Peninsula to Belize.
One of the core causes is deforestation. In addition to contributing to global warming, it also causes soil erosion, which in turn, leads to surplus nutrients being washed into rivers and flowing into the ocean.
Rising nutrient and nitrogen levels have several effects on the seawater. One is to limit the amount of oxygen in the water, creating dead zones, according to the US National Ocean Service. The other is to promote the growth of seaweed and algal blooms – like the Sargasso seaweed that is now swamping Mexican beaches.

FOR the third time in as many months, the crew of an oil tanker found themselves at the centre of an international incident. The British Heritage, a vessel owned by BP, a British oil firm, was sailing east through the Strait of Hormuz on July 10th when three Iranian gunboats allegedly tried to halt its passage. They soon backed down and allowed the tanker to continue—but only because it was trailed by the HMS Montrose, a British warship. Reports suggest that the frigate had trained its guns on the Iranian boats. The latter would have been manned not by Iran’s regular navy but by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which operates small attack craft in the Gulf.

TOKYO — Isoko Mochizuki, a reporter for Tokyo’s largest regional newspaper, walks into a government news conference pulling a burgundy wheeled suitcase that holds her laptop, books and notes. She sits toward the back. After the other journalists politely ask their questions, she pounces.
Sometimes rambling, sometimes boring down on tiny details, she presses for answers. Often, the officials chastise her for being long-winded or cut her off altogether. “I don’t have to answer each of your questions,” Yoshihide Suga, the chief cabinet secretary, snapped recently after she asked about North Korea, and then stalked away from the podium.
Ms. Mochizuki, 43, has yet to break a major political scandal or expose business-toppling corruption. But she does ask a lot of questions. And that has made her something of a folk hero for press freedom in Japan.
While her industry colleagues often act more as stenographers than inquisitors, she refuses to take no for an answer, repeatedly getting under the skin of the politicians and bureaucrats she interrogates.

すごいですね。

外国から見ると日本のテーマレストランは奇妙だったり気味悪かったりするようで、外国人のブログには、よく変わったレストランが出てきます。
このブログの管理人は日本の食事は今まで食べた事のあるものののなかで最もおいしいと言ってくれているのですが、ここで紹介するレストランは、どちらかというと味よりもエンターテイメントとして楽しんでくださいとのこと。
ここで紹介されている原宿のかわいいモンスターカフェや吉祥寺幽霊、新宿の戦国武勇団など日本人もあまり知らないところを外国人はよく知っていてびっくりします。

●Top Pay Makes Switzerland No. 1 for Expats

スイスがExpats(外国で働く人材）の間でNo.1の評価を得た
HSBCの調査によると外国で働く人材の間で４年間トップを維持していたシンガポールを抜いてトップの座についたようです。
この調査によるとスイスでの平均的なサラリーは、111,587ドル（約１,205万円）とHSBCが調査した33カ国の平均75,966ドル（約820万円）よりも47％高いとのこと。
ただ、最近Expatの間では賃金の高さばかりでなく、ワーク・ライフバランスや子供を育てるのに良い環境、そして安全を重視するようになっていてスイスはそれらの評価が非常に高いとのこと。
日本人からこのランキングを見ると意外かもしれませんが、スペインやトルコ、ベトナムなどがトップ10に入っている一方、UKはEU離脱騒動の影響で７つ下がって27位に下がってしまったと嘆いています。
果たして気なる日本は？
なんと32位。多くの評価項目の中で、日本がスイスを上回るのは、LivingカテゴリーでFulfilment（満足）と文化的自由度、受け入れ度の２項目だけで、逆に大きく差をつけられているのが、収入、ワークライフバランス、子供の教育カテゴリーの友達の作りやすさ、学習の項目です。

Switzerland has knocked Singapore off its perch as the world’s top-ranked destination for expatriates.
The nation -- home to some of the biggest private banks, commodity traders and pharmaceuticals companies -- was judged the best place to live and work, according to a study published on Thursday by HSBC Holdings Plc. Switzerland jumped from No. 8 last year as it garnered top marks for its earning potential and stability.
The average Swiss salary of $111,587 is 47% higher than the $75,966 mean pay package across the 33 nations surveyed by HSBC in the 12th edition of their annual expat country ranking. Seven out of 10 expats said they had more disposable income after moving to Switzerland.
While the nation of iconic ski resorts from Zermatt and Verbier to St. Moritz scored well for quality of life, Switzerland isn’t the place for a sense of fulfillment or making friends -- ranking 31st and 24th respectively on those measures. On the other hand, it’s perceived as great place to raise children and make a long-term home.

“Expats are increasingly looking at more than just the financial returns they get from moving to a new market,” John Goddard, head of HSBC’s expat unit, said in a Bloomberg Television interview. “They’re looking at work-life balance, the general environment in which they want to bring up their children, they’re looking at safety, and Switzerland marks really well against all those different categories.”
Singapore placed second, after topping the ranking for the past four years.

Japan, a wonderful country that may seem enticing and intimidating at the same time. It took us a while to get there, but after just a few hours in Tokyo, we knew we would be back. And we ended up going there 4 times within 1.5 years.
I wish I’d known some things before our first visit. It would have made travelling easier and even more enjoyable but it doesn’t mean discovering them ourselves wasn’t fun.
If you’re planning to visit Japan for the first time, here are our 25 useful tips & things to know.
1. Convenience stores are really convenient
FamilyMart, 7-Eleven, Circle K, Lawson and Daily Yamazaki stores (the konbini) are everywhere and offer lots of useful products and services. Hot meals, sushi, alcohol, ice cream, bathroom essentials, ATMs, coffee – you can get there almost anything you may need on a trip. Most have also a small area with a kettle, microwave and bar-style seating space. Payment by credit card, cash or IC (Suica or similar) card. 2. Look up
Restaurants, shops and cafes may not be on the street level – buildings in Japan are often very narrow but tall. Look up to see what’s on higher floors or find a building directory near the main entrance. 3. Go to the basement
Big department stores and shopping malls usually hide a real foodie paradise in the basement. Bento boxes, sweet treats, sushi, teas, fruits, hams and cheeses plus sometimes a few restaurants. Last hour before closing they mark down bento boxes and you can get a good dinner for 50% or less.

HenryIndexによると、日本とシンガポールのパスポートは世界の189カ国で受け入れられ世界で最もパワフルなパスポートで、続く第２グループが、韓国、ドイツ、フィンランドの187カ国。
ちなみにアメリカやUKは183カ国の第６グループに位置しています。
日本の世界におけるこの信用の高さはいつまで続くのでしょうか？
最近の国際機関無視の影響が心配です。
(CNN) — It's been a three-horse race this year to be named the world's most powerful passport, with all top three contenders in Asia.
Now, as we enter the second half of 2019, Japan and Singapore have held onto their position as the world's most travel-friendly passports, with South Korea dropping into second place.
That's the view of the Henley Passport Index, which periodically measures the access each country's travel document affords.
Singapore and Japan's passports have topped the rankings thanks to both documents offering access to 189 countries each.
South Korea is now rubbing shoulders with Finland and Germany in the second tier, with citizens of all three countries able to access 187 jurisdictions around the world without a prior visa.
Finland has benefited from recent changes to Pakistan's formerly highly restrictive visa policy. Pakistan now offers an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) to citizens of 50 countries, including Finland, Japan, Malta, Spain, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates -- but not, notably, the United States or the UK.

●Five Placec to Explore in Cameroon
昨日Silvieにカメルーンを紹介してもらいましたが、本日はカメールンについて書かれたブログを見つけたのでご紹介致します。
アフリカというとほとんどの日本人にはあまり縁がないので、どこに行けばいいのか、何をすればいいのかよくわかりません。
DCECでは、今までにケニア人、ギニア人、カメルーン人などと仕事をしてきましたが、彼らは日本人が思うよりもはるかにグローバル化しています。そして、フィリピンと同じように家族がヨーロッパで学んだり働いたりしていて、ヨーロッパ諸国にとっては日本よりも身近なのかもしれません。
このブログでは、まずMarche des Fleurs（フラワーマーケット）というアートと花のマーケットに行くことを勧めています。
もっとチャレンジをしたい人はローカルに人気のMarche Central（中央マーケット）に行くことをお勧めしていますが、気の様わい人には向いていないようです。ちょっと怖そうですが面白そうですね。
